1 John 2B: #Walk In The #Light (#Bible)

Theme: Walk In The Light

3) By renouncing the world (15-17)

The world promotes lust (15-16)

Covetousness is idolatry (Col. 3:5). The world tempts you to put things (your pleasure, your possessions, your glory) in the place of God. You don't have to deprive yourself of every material thing, but should avoid putting the world in God's place. You should renounce the world because it promotes lust.

Creation is passing away (17)

Why fix your hope on something which is perishing? The whole creation groans in sin (Rom. 8), and will be destroyed by fire (2 Pet. 3). Christ gives you eternal life and possessions in a new heavens and earth (Rev. 21-22). You should renounce the world, because it is passing away.

Obedience confirms salvation (17b)

Love for the world comes from your sin nature, but not from God (Gal. 5:22ff; cf. James 1:13-18.). Love for the world, then, can make you doubt whether God's love is in you. Renouncing the world doesn't save you from your sin, or keep you saved; this comes only by relying on Christ's death and resurrection as your payment for sin. But once you are already saved, when you obey God, it gives you assurance that you are His child. You should renounce the world, because obedience confirms the fact you are saved.

The Gospel

Have you heard Christ died for our sins, and God raised Him from the dead? Did you know God saves you from hell and gives you eternal life through faith in this finished work alone, not your merits (Jn. 3:16; 1 Cor. 15:1-3; Eph. 2:8-10; 2 Thess. 1:8-9)? This is so man cannot boast, and God alone gets the glory (Eph. 2:8-9).

The grand purpose of creation is to bring glory and pleasure to God in Christ (Eph. 1:1-10; Rev. 4:11). The gospel of Christ's death and resurrection for our sins, achieves this goal by magnifying God's grace and mercy towards undeserving sinners. The purpose of faithguard, is to glorify God, by defending and confirming the gospel of Jesus Christ.
