1 John 5: #Walk In The #Light

Theme: Walk In The Light

5) By knowing you are saved (5:1-21)

God wants you to know you have eternal life, when you are saved. The Holy Spirit gives you two main ways to know you are saved.

Love your brother

That which has been born of God will love that which has been born of God (5:1). When you habitually keep God's commandments, it assures you you are saved. The commandments John speaks of, specifically refers to showing love for your brother (1-2; cf. John 15). You do not have to keep God's commandments in order to obtain salvation, or in order to stay saved, but if you are saved, you will love brother.

Showing love for your brother is a great assurance to you, that you are a child of God, and gives you confidence in prayer. Chapter 4 said you love your brother by giving him what he needs when you have it. This passage also adds that you should pray for your brother if he sins in a way which does not result in physical death. You should know you are saved, by loving your brother.

Believe God's word.

"I write these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God so that you may know that you have eternal life" (13). Some form of the word "know" appears at least 38 times in this letter. 1 John teaches that, by the indwelling Holy Spirit (2:20), you may know God (1 John 2:3, 13), know you are in fellowship with God (2:5), that you are a child of God (3:7-12), that it is the "last time" (2:18), know "all things" pertaining to spiritual truths in the Bible (cf. 1 Cor. 2), and know that you "have eternal life" (1 John 5), etc.

The Holy Spirit reveals the mind of Christ to you, through the spiritual truth in God's word (cf. 1 Cor. 2). Ps. 119:99 says, "I have more understanding than all my teachers: for thy testimonies are my meditation". God says that everyone who trust's Christ as savior "has eternal life" (13). God's witness is greater than that of men (9), and believing God's word will assure you you have eternal life. You should know you are saved by believing God's word.

The Gospel

Have you heard Christ died for our sins, and God raised Him from the dead? Did you know God saves you from hell and gives you eternal life through faith in this finished work alone, not your merits (Jn. 3:16; 1 Cor. 15:1-3; Eph. 2:8-10; 2 Thess. 1:8-9)? This is so man cannot boast, and God alone gets the glory (Eph. 2:8-9).

The grand purpose of creation is to bring glory and pleasure to God in Christ (Eph. 1:1-10; Rev. 4:11). The gospel of Christ's death and resurrection for our sins, achieves this goal by magnifying God's grace and mercy towards undeserving sinners. The purpose of faithguard, is to glorify God, by defending and confirming the gospel of Jesus Christ.
