Jesus Predicts Persecution, The Ministry Of The Spirit, And His Return To The Father: John 16:1-33

Text: John 16:1-33

Theme: "And many other signs truly did Jesus in the presence of his disciples, which are not written in this book: But these are written, that ye might believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God; and that believing ye might have life through his name." (20:30-31).

3. Preparatory Persuasion
     C. Of disciples (13-17)

Here, Jesus continues to prepare the disciples for His departure, by predicting their persecution (v1-4), the ministry of the Spirit in their lives (v5-14), and His return to the Father (v15-33).

Jesus predicted persecution (v1-4). The disciples would be excluded and killed by the world, because it doesn't know God or Jesus. Knowing that this would occur to them would prepare them, and keep them from "stumbling". Jesus predicted persecution.

Jesus predicted the ministry of the Holy Spirit (v5-14). Because He would rise from the dead and ascend to the Father, Jesus could send the Holy Spirit to the disciples (v7). The Spirit would convict the world of sin (because they do not believe on Jesus as Savior), righteousness (Jesus was put to death for the sins of the world, thus demonstrating God's righteous attitude towards sin--cf. Romans 3. Also, God showed the righteousness of Jesus by raising Him from the dead--Romans 1:4; 4:24, and receiving Him into heaven, after Jesus had purged our sins --cf. Hebrews), and judgment (Acts 17:31).

The Holy Spirit would guide the disciples into "all the truth". This would enable them to understand the events which would follow, e.g., the meaning of His death and resurrection, and other future events (cf, e.g., Revelation; v13). The Spirit would always seeks to glorify Christ (not Himself), by enabling the disciples to understand revelation about Jesus (v14-15). Jesus predicted the ministry of the Spirit in believer's lives.

Jesus predicted His return to the Father (v16-33). He would be crucified, then rise and return to the Father in Heaven (cf. v28; chapters 20-21). However, He would see the disciples again, and their sorrow would be turned to joy (v22). This occurred after His resurrection, when Jesus appeared to them. Death also ushers believers into the presence of the Lord (2 Cor. 5:8), and Christ will return to "catch up" the church (1 Thess. 4:13-18ff.). In the meanwhile, the believers would enjoy a new relationship with God as their Father (v 23-27). This meant they could ask the Father for anything in Jesus name, and He would give it to them.

Praying in "Jesus name" may mean that a person is saved, and is in Christ (cf. I in you and you in me--chapter 15, 17), praying for those things which Jesus would pray for (cf. "not My will but thine be done--chapter 17), praying for those things which would glorify God the Father through Jesus Christ (cf. 14:13), praying for things which would result in bearing the fruit of love (14:15; 15:8-12), and, as mentioned in the promise that the Spirit would take knowledge of Christ and disclose it to the disciples (16:13-15), praying for an understanding of God's Word (cf. 1 Corinthians 2:12-16; James 1:5). Though it would cause temporary sorrow, all of these things would be benefits of Jesus return to the Father, since He had "overcome the world". Jesus predicted His return to the Father.

The Gospel

Have you heard Christ died for our sins, and God raised Him from the dead? Did you know God saves you from hell and gives you eternal life through faith in this finished work alone, not your merits (Jn. 3:16; 1 Cor. 15:1-3; Eph. 2:8-10; 2 Thess. 1:8-9)? This is so man cannot boast, and God alone gets the glory (Eph. 2:8-9).


The grand purpose of creation is to bring glory and pleasure to God in Christ (Eph. 1:1-10; Rev. 4:11). The gospel of Christ's death and resurrection for our sins, achieves this goal by magnifying God's grace and mercy towards undeserving sinners. The purpose of faithguard, is to glorify God, by defending and confirming the gospel of Jesus Christ.
